Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy massage is a highly beneficial, gentle & relaxing complementary treatment for deep relaxation which can be used safely throughout the second and third trimesters of pregnancy (14 weeks onwards) and Just Massage is a trained, insured and highly experienced provider.
A full consultation is carried out prior to your massage and together we then design your perfect treatment.
An average pregnancy lasts 40 weeks but every woman is different and every pregnancy is different. At a time when pain relief can be limited, massage can help with a variety of symptoms such as restless legs, lower back discomfort, carpel tunnel syndrome, nausea and sleeplessness as well as providing much needed relaxation and well-being time.
You will need to be into your 2nd trimester to receive a massage treatment (due to UK insurance regulations).
Types of Massage
In our peaceful and private treatment room, the super comfy, extra- wide and soft heated massage bed together with a selection of bean bags, pilllows and cushions will make you sink into a calm and meditative state in no time at all.
Full body massage is given in the most wonderfully nurturing position on your side, made supremely comfortable through the careful positioning of pillows. Lying on your stomach or back in the latter stages of pregnancy is not good for either you or the baby! In addition, head and face massage can be added for a longer, more luxurious and deeply relaxing experience.
Back massage can also be provided in an extremely comfortable seated position if preferred or is needed therapeutically.
Alternative Treatments
You may prefer to have a different kind of treatment such as the meditative Natural Lift Facial Massage which is a little like Reflexology but for the face!...an incredibly relaxing and perfectly safe holistic treatment that will leave your whole body feeling deeply relaxed. And Thai Hand and Foot massage is another popular holistic treatment. Combinations of all or part of these therapies are all options and can be worked out according to your needs on the day.
benefits
People choose massage for many different reasons and some of the reported benefits during pregnancy include:
- Pain and tension relief - the body undergoes a huge amount of change in a relatively short period of time so perhaps its not very surprising that the body can feel somewhat under siege! Massage helps to stop the build up of tension, in the neck, shoulder and sometimes unexpected areas such as arms (swelling of the body can cause a variety of new and interesting reactions!) Discomfort in the lower back and hips can also be alleviated - the expansion of these areas to accommodate the growing baby, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy is a common cause of discomfort.
- Revitalisation - massage increases the flow of endorphins and helps reduce the fatigue often felt at the beginning and end of pregnancy.
- Improved circulation - the increased tendency to retain fluid in the legs, ankles and feet is improved by the stimulation and drainage of the lymph system as result of massage.
- Maintain skin suppleness and elasticity - massage helps to prevent or at least minimise stretch marks which often appear around the fifth month
- And perhaps most importantly... massage induces a feeling of well-being, helping to keep you supremely relaxed ... perhaps the best preparation for the birth of your beautiful baby!
Self care
1st Trimester Hormone surges, nausea, morning sickness and extreme tiredness can be helped by being kind to yourself...warm relaxing baths, lots of sleep and peppermint or chamomile team can also help with morning sickness.
2nd trimester (weeks 13 to 26) you can start to massage your belly, breasts and thighs with a good quality massage oil to prevent stretch marks. If you are suffering with constipation, perhaps ask your partner or a good friend to rub your lower back in a gentle clockwise direction.
3rd trimester (weeks 27-40) the extra weight puts pressure on the back, legs and feet so professional massage can help with any discomfort and swelling as well as general relaxation, rest and peace!
